Fact Check Policy

Karnataka Times occasionally publishes fact-check articles to
verify viral claims, social media forwards and widely shared news items.

Selection of Claims

  • Viral posts or forwards that are widely shared on social media or messaging apps.
  • Claims that may impact public safety, health, elections, finances or reputation.
  • Statements by public figures that need verification.

Verification Process

  • We search for original context: full speech, original image/video or primary document.
  • We consult official websites, government orders, court documents and reputable sources.
  • Where possible, we contact relevant authorities or experts for confirmation.
  • We may use digital tools to check images, videos and timestamps where needed.

Ratings & Presentation

Our fact-check stories clearly mention:

  • The original claim (with context and source).
  • Evidence supporting or contradicting the claim.
  • A clear conclusion such as True, False,
    Partly True or Misleading.

Corrections to Fact-Checks

If new verified information emerges that changes the conclusion of a fact-check,
we update the article and add a clear note explaining the change.
